PRINCE GEORGE, BC – A rally against the “Harmonized Sales Tax” (HST) is scheduled for 10am, Saturday, September 25, outside of Liberal MLA Pat Bell’s constituency office (770 Central Street East in Prince George). The local rally follows the successful campaign to launch an initiative against the tax. In 90 days, volunteers gathered over 14,000 signatures in the Prince George-Mackenzie and Prince George-Valemount ridings, and over 700,000 provincially. Eric Allen, riding captain for the local “Fight HST” committee, says that volunteers in this region are enthusiastic and determined to defeat this controversial tax that has been imposed by the provincial government, and that the September 25th rally is one more step in this process. One of the recent things that has contributed to the determination of the thousands of volunteers across the province is the fact that leading up and during the May 2009 provincial election, the BC Liberal government claimed that it had not been discussing or considering adoption of the HST. Yet documents recently acquired by the media through a Freedom of Information request clearly show that the government was not telling the truth to the people of the province. “This is a bad tax that will cost ordinary British Columbians billions of dollars, and it was brought in using anti-democratic methods,” says Allen. “If the provincial government continues to defy the will of the people and refuses to eliminate the tax, campaigns to recall Liberal MLAs will most definitely be launched.” Organizers of the September 25th rally are inviting everyone from across the region to participate, no matter their political persuasion. People are encouraged to get creative, make their own signs and displays, and come on down to show their opposition to the HST. |
